Hello,
Monday 24 March 2008 was a bank holiday in the UK, part of the
long Easter weekend. At about 5.15 in the afternoon here in
Portugal it was not a holiday, and I was sat at my computer
working. The TV was on in the room, tuned for no particular
reason to the UK mainstream television channel ITV1. (generally
regarded as the number 3 channel after BBC1 and 2)
I was a little surprised to suddenly be aware of a woman
whipping a man with what appeared to be a riding crop on the
television. Obviously such things tend to get my attention and I
looked up to find that the scene was in an episode of the well
known TV murder mystery "Midsomer Murders".
My surprise wasn't that they should have what appeared to be a
woman whipping her lover (or husband?) in an obvious SM in the
bedroom scene in that program. Television loves to increase
ratings by using our kink. My surprise was that in what would in
the UK be felt to be "family viewing hours", there was no longer
any problem in showing such things.
I didn't watch the episode in question any further as I was busy
at the time, and I doubt that they used the SM couple to show
bdsm in a particularly positive light. My impression was that it
was treated as a kinky sex secret likely to render the couple
victims of jest (or blackmail) as would be typical of such
shows.
But it does seem to show that bdsm in the bedroom is now such an
acceptable form of sexual activity, that it can be shown long
before the watershed on a holiday weekend. (9pm used to be the
watershed hour deemed to be the time after which it was ok to
show more adult oriented content in the UK).
